Dance Courses Offered

Introduction to Dance- This introductory class is meant for the dance student with little to no previous dance experience. This course at FUHS exposes the students to a variety of dance styles such as jazz, ballet, contemporary/modern, tap, hip hop, musical theatre, social dance and beginning choreography concepts. The objective of this class is to prepare the dancer for their second year in dance.

Intermediate Dance- The Intermediate Dance course at FUHS continues the base from which a dancer successfully completed in Introduction to Dance. Previous dance experience may also be taken into consideration for placement in this course. This course will focus on more extensive techniques than previously taught, primarily in the jazz, ballet, musical theatre and modern genres. Concepts such as improvisation and choreography will also be worked on throughout the year. The class will culminate in a dance concert during the second semester featuring a full class piece and possible student choreography works. Through classroom exercises, students will achieve advanced-beginning and intermediate level technical understanding, refine rhythm and timing, begin to adapt to various dance styles and develop beginning performances skills. Admittance to this course is by audition only.

Advanced Dance- Advanced Dance is meant for the student with previous years of dance experience. The objective of this course is to increase knowledge, technicality, and appreciation of dance through the study and exploration of selected dance forms. Jazz, ballet, modern, contemporary, and musical theatre will be taught throughout the year. Students will have two performance opportunities this year in the Fall and Spring Dance Concerts. Students will also have the opportunity to see live performances and critically review them. An additional focus of composition and choreography will be primary for this course. Admittance to this course is by audition only.

Dance Production- This is a pre-professional performance-based course. Students will utilize advanced skills in ballet, jazz, modern, hip hop and musical theatre techniques to choreograph, direct and produce annual concerts. Students will advance their study of choreographic technique by choreographing for concerts and community performances. Dance Production enhances school spirit by performing at school sporting events, community events, and by participating in local festivals throughout Southern California.
